A practice to borrow
5 · 4 · 3 · 2 · 1 grounding
When anxiety pulls you into what-ifs, your senses can walk you back to the room you’re actually in. Go slowly — this isn’t a race to finish.
Five senses, slowly
Notice 5 things you can see
Name them slowly — the fan, the doorframe, the light on the floor. Ordinary is perfect.
Notice 4 things you can touch
The chair under you, cloth on your arm, your feet on the ground. Let each one register.
Notice 3 things you can hear
Traffic, a fridge hum, your own breath. Nearer or farther — just notice.
Notice 2 things you can smell
Or two smells you like remembering. Coffee, rain on dust. Memory counts.
Notice 1 thing you can taste
A sip of water works. So does simply noticing your mouth as it is.
Afterwards
Take one settling breath to close — there’s a guided one here. A practice like this can steady a moment; it isn’t a treatment. If anxious moments are becoming anxious weeks, that’s exactly what therapy is for. In crisis, call Tele-MANAS 14416 (24×7, free).
