Before you begin
Your first session, minus the mystery.
Most of the fear of starting therapy is not knowing what happens in the room. Here is what actually happens — step by step, nothing hidden.
How it goes
You reach out
Book a slot online or send a WhatsApp message. You don't need a diagnosis, a referral, or a tidy explanation — “I'm not doing okay and I'd like to talk to someone” is a complete reason.
Before the session
You'll get a confirmation and, for online sessions, a Google Meet link. Find a private corner, keep headphones handy, and that's genuinely all the preparation there is. Sessions run about 50 minutes [FILL: confirm].
The session itself
Mostly, a conversation. You share what's been going on — in whatever order and depth feels okay. Swathi listens, asks gentle questions to understand what you're carrying, and shares honestly how she thinks she can help. No tests sprung on you, no couch, no dissecting your childhood on day one.
What happens after
You take your time and decide whether it felt right. If you continue, sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly to begin with, and the rhythm is reviewed together. If it didn't feel like a fit, that's useful information too — and completely okay to say.
You don’t have to
- share everything in the first session — pace is yours to set
- prepare notes, an agenda, or the “right words”
- have a diagnosis, or know what to call what you're feeling
- decide in advance whether you'll continue
- hide that you're nervous — nearly everyone is, and it's welcome in the room
One honest expectation to bring: therapy is a working relationship, not a single conversation — most people need a few sessions before it starts to feel like theirs. Wondering about confidentiality, fees, or session rhythm? The FAQ answers all of it plainly, and the full walkthrough lives in this longer article.
The first step is smaller than it looks.
One session. No commitment beyond it. You decide everything after that.
